Interior Inspiration | FoA. studio and apartment

In the last couple of weeks I’m busy searching for interior for FoA’s new studio as well as for the apartment in Budapest I’ve told about before. I’m really thrilled with the atelier as it is located in a building which was the former home of seamen in the Nineteenth century. It has big windows with a view over the water. The studio has already a new coat of paint and not too long from now the moving can begin! The following interior spheres inspire me. What do you think of these living styles?

The Exchange Hotel | Department Store

After my early-morning guided tour through The Exchange hotel last week, I had a cup of coffee in the hotels restaurant ‘Stock’ and popped into the department store ‘Options!’, which are in the same building. In the store you can find all sorts of gadgets, interior pieces and clothing designs from foreign countries to collaborations with local producers, like AMFI students. They also have a small built-in atelier where they make products themselves. The store and restaurant look fresh and clean, which are great acquisitions for The Damrak I think!

First of August at The Exchange Hotel

When planning a citytrip, for me it’s not always easy to find a nice hotel. Maybe for that reason this new hotel in Amsterdam caught my attention when I walked by a little while ago. The Exchange Hotel is a concept by Suzanne Oxenaar and Otto Nan, initatiors of the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy. The Exchange is part of ‘The Red Carpet’, an urban-renewal project that is aimed at giving the Damrak a more diverse and fashionable look. Each room of the hotel has been designed and dressed by graduates and alumni of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. The result: a hotel with rooms that are diverse in their concept and decoration. I had the chance to see a couple of rooms and it was a fun surprise what to find behind each door! One example is the ‘pleats room’ (shown on the nineth and tenth image), designed by Paul Hanraets. The room is inspired by the pleats and folds in a simple white T-shirt when worn, the walls of this room are fixed in a surreal composition of giant size pleats. Or the ‘Hide and Seek’ room (fifth image) by Denise de Geijter which is based on the simple purpose of  clothing in which a person can hide any sign of ego or personal expression. The room is dressed entirely in plain and simple, second skin layers that hide disturbing little details like power sockets from sight.

Authentic & handmade products | Trend

I notice how anything that appears whimsically or uniquely handcrafted, whether it’s jewelry, fashion or wrapping paper, is popular and finding a market nowadays. Sites like Etsy are gaining popularity and blogs that tell the stories of independent young craftsmen and -women are popping up rapidly. We want to pay more and more attention to the origins of the products we buy and the crafting process behind it. I’ve read somewhere that this trend could be a reflection of our feelings of insecurity. A return to things that are handmade (which infers competence) or appear older (which imbues nostalgia and comfort) seem somehow more honest or trustworthy; the products give people a reassuring sense of stability and security in uncertain times. Anyhow, I love to search for unique handmade products, like these. Don’t you?

Photography Inspiration | Ryan Furbush

I came across the work of Ryan Furbush, a young amateur photographer from Seattle. I love his photographer’s eye with the random, daily captures and his use of colors. Together with the characteristic double exposures, his images get a beautiful dreamy vibe.
I’m trying for a documentation of experiences and emotions together ideally. I like the expressions of the people in my photos, i.e. my friends, to be similar. A perfect calm expression (usually straight into the camera) just looks right to me; not a smile, not a frown.’ Ryan Furbush
