‘Fashion isn’t just a product, fashion is connecting and sharing the different parts of our social lives.’ (Karlijn, 1st of August 2010)
First of August is an Amsterdam-based creative company of Karlijn Boersma. She graduated at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and gained a Master degree in Cultural Sociology, with a strong focus on the relation between fashion and sociological trends. The inspiration out of ‘moments’ in Karlijn’s daily life assembled into the five elements that FoA exists of today; a blog, shop, clothing collection, academy and studio.
FoA invites you to read, shop, create, learn and visit.
Read | BLOG
First of August started as a blog on August first, 2010. It isn’t just a date; it is the moment that Karlijn decided to share her thoughts and inspiration with you. The blog distinguishes itself from other blogs, because of the connection between a personal vision on style and sociological trends. People, style and identity are the key issues on the blog.
Shop | WEBSHOP
In FoA’s webshop you find the trends reported on the blog translated in actual products. We sell clothes and accessories that are close to our personal taste and try to define a modern style for the elegant, many-sided and enthusiastic urban women. The online shop offers the ‘by FoA’ clothing collection and young designer labels from Berlin, Tokyo, New York and San Fransisco.
Create | PRODUCTION
The clothing collection ‘by FoA’ is based on Karlijn’s vision on style. Inspired by her favorite vintage items, simple shapes and colors and cities around the world, she designed a collection with a subtle blend of elegance and ease. By making small collections, which aren’t restricted to time or space and developing its own production channel, ‘by FoA’ is a constantly evolving process.
Learn | ACADEMY
FoA.Academy is a platform for young intellectuals to connect fashion, cultures and social trends to sociological insights. Sociological thinkers such as Bourdieu, Giddens and Elias have inspired FoA’s vision on the meaning of style. By organizing lecture evenings young researchers can share their interesting research projects and a more in-depth perspective on fashion and style will be explored.
Visit | STUDIO
In a former maritime college and home in the Eastern district of Amsterdam, FoA works on her daily activities. A showroom in the studio is an extension of FoA’s online world. Curious about our work and products? Feel free to visit the FoA studio or get in touch by sending an email to info@shopfirstofaugust.com.
